The D700 is still pretty darn heavy to carry around all day. The M8 is
still my everyday carry everywhere camera. The R8DMR is also too heavy for
everyday carry, but it is always in the car with the D700.

As was the D3 or D2.
But people don't buy the D2, 3 or 4. to carry around with them all day or on
a vacation or for street shooting. They buy a D700, 800 or 900 which cost
and weights half as much has the same sensor and all the necessary features.
And usually follows six months later after the introduction of the high
priced spread. But with no trans fat.
The top line nikon cameras have been made for commercial photographers on
commercial jobs or for other other similar very demanding situations.
often they need the weight to counterbalance a very long fast optic which
costs another seven grand.
