[Leica] Lightroom Catalog on External Drive

I run my LR main catalog (38000 files) off my Drobo on firewire 800

works fine for me

My understanding of the USB's disadvantage is that it uses the main 
processor to do its work, here as firewire has its own dedicated processor, 
so does not cut into computing cycles.
