Your reactions are the same as mine.  The first one reminds me of some shots 
I made with a Leica IIIa and 50 Elmar in the early fifties, when Plus-X ASA 
50 was the standard film, and XX ASA 100 was fast!  Grain was just a part of 
the image.  Tri-X came out a few years later.
