Ah, well, they are often advertised in cheap-o media, or late night TV, 
where the show takes over a couple of ballrooms at a local motel. The 
paintings are often done as copies in the Far East. You often see the 
results in, well, other motels.

I think they were really a phenomena of the pre-internet age.
