It could also be that you keep the camera off your arm and not in a bag.
Having a camera in a bag makes one one it small and slippery as possible.

Also I'm not shooting film so I'm not worrying about loosing contrast.
With digital I slide the histogram slider at the bottom to the right and
I've got my black for sure. I'm not worrying about making flat  looking C
prints.
