Data on a HDD is there and recoverable by the knowledgeable ( and not
necessarily honest) man. No, delete does nothing to the data, it just
erases the file pointers. Got last years' ( or 10 years ago) tax data on
it? Someone can recover that data ( including the social security number,
your employee number, maybe even your bank account numbers) to use in
nefarious ways.

To wipe the disk really clean takes special SW. A hammer is easier and
faster, and works remarkably well. Uses less electricity as well. It is
also remarkably permanent.

Just because Doug takes a hammer to his drive, does not mean that the parts
can not be recycled at that point....After all, all the parts are still
there.

In our community in California, electronic waste is collected at special
locations, and recycled appropriately. About twice yearly. I have 2
computers that will go out in about a month. They send them to India and
China where poor people are paid pennies to remove IC chips for the gold
wire. They sit over vats of caustic acids, breathing in noxious fumes, for
hours daily. The metals are recycled. The health of the lives involved are
ruined..

Recycling Is not all it is cracked up to be......

The question remains, why?
And why not recycle?
