The local fish hatchery's resident Great Blue Heron has been very
cooperative but the backgrounds and lighting have not been. Yesterday I
tried unusual (for me) technique:

I used a tripod
I used the camera's base ISO
I stopped the lens down to f/19
I used rubber muck boots
I used mirror pre-release and self timer
I used a 1/2 sec shutter speed.

There were 2 ideas behind the 1/2 sec shutter speed. First, I wanted to
reduce the contrast of the flowing water, and second, I wanted to contrast
the heron's motionlessness with the flowing water. The rubber muck boots
were so I could stand in the stream without soaking my feet. I did this to
get a jumble of rocks out of the background.

What do you think? (klicken Sie the Picture to embiggen the Pixels)
