- hardware stores have far too few neat stuff.  Can only get emery paper
to 440.  Need much finer.

Are there chain auto supply stores near you, like Autozone or O'Reillys? If
so, you can usually get 3M wet or dry paper in grits to 2000 that should
work for you.
