The problems with the supermarket vs local approaches are different. The main issue with the supermarket model is that supply, cost structures, appearance and shelf life are given precedence over freshness and nutritional value. A supermarket apple has about 1/3 the micro-nutrients as an apple in 1950, but no-one is sure why. The main problem with the 'Asian' (although in practice this model operates in a lot of places, including on a small scale here where I live) model is that when food safety hazards do manifest they are not detected before market. Biological toxin, pesticide and other types of contamination of food at biologically significant levels occurs in many of these countries at high rates. The best of both worlds is achievable but hasn't been put into practice widely. Humans are tough; most of these threats, from both approaches, are probably nowhere near as serious as many make them out to be.
