A red bird got caught in the fence near the guinea house. Tom freed him and
brought him over for photos before we released him. He has a very crooked
beak. Is that a genetic malformation? Caused by pesticides or something?

Bill deformities are either becoming more common or people are noticing them
more, in a wide variety of species. The cause hasn't been determined yet
AFAIK. This Cardinal's beak isn't so badly deformed that he can't crack
seeds open so he should be OK.
