The Wikipedia entry is quite fascinating http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stralsund Apparently it used to be a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, then a Swedish province and went through many a war before finally becoming German With the exception of the Red-brick Gothic, the architecture is rather untypical for Germany and has a lot of Scandinavian features.
