Hi Nathan,

I gather it's all very closely related. The Wikipedia 
entry is quite fascinating

Apparently it used to be a part of the Kingdom of 
Denmark, then a Swedish province and went through many 
a war before finally becoming German

With the exception of the Red-brick Gothic, the 
architecture is rather untypical for Germany and has a 
lot of Scandinavian features.
