Sometimes I'll set up a bounce strobe in a room and use a wireless trigger on the camera. The flash is not attached to me or the camera. It's just another light that happens to fire at 1/1200th of a second now and again. It's not associated with me or where I happen to be or where my camera's pointed. For all anyone knows it was some bodies point'n'shoot. Nobody cares. The main point, if you wish to use a flash, is to get over "your" caring what "they" think about it. It's just another technique which will provide different, and potentially, when well used, improved results. We all know that there are places where the light is simply lousy; not only in terms of "not much of it" but also poorly placed in relation to our subjects. That's when we have to improvise for best results: a flash; a reflector; move a lamp; whatever it takes to "make" the photograph(s).
