When flying, I NEVER check my camera gear, ALWAYS carry on.  NO EXCEPTIONS!!!

Sometimes you just can't carry it all on the plane.  If I have to
check equipment, I carry on what I need to work for 2 days without
getting my checked bags.

I learned the hard way.  Luggage lost for 2 days in Brendisi.  Had
batteries, no charger.  Oops.
