Subject: [Leica] Gene's photos - Julia's eyes

Larry,

Well, I wish I could say it was a well planned shot, and claim to be that
photographic genius, but it was indeed a lucky catch. Julia is usually
quite the ham around the camera, but on this day she was being very evasive,
this was the best of my attempts that morning.

Thanks for the comments, they are much appreciated.

Cheers,
Gene

Gene,

I like them all. And I agree with the consensus that Julia's Eyes is the
standout. But what makes it so appealing is not for its technical
excellence. Indeed it is a possibly unintended optical illusion. The viewer
fixates on the eyes peering out over the blanket and assumes that they are
sharply delineated (i.e. focus on the eyes). But they are not. Inspection of
the large scale image reveals no sharp edges in the eyeballs. Indeed, at an
exposure of 1/24 second on a probably hand held camera you would not expect
wire sharp edges. It's just that everything else in the image is so soft
that the eyes stand out and the viewer feels that they are peering directly
at him/her. This is what gives the image its intimacy. It is a very good
catch and proves that sharpness isn't everything in a photo. And, Gene, if
you intended that illusion, you are a photographic genius.
