Gerry,

I was looking for a good small camera for my daughter, and wound up 
buying the Canon S90.  Of course I had to play with it first and was 
impressed with the image quality and camera controls.  The one I like 
best is the Panasonic GF-1.  It is somewhat more.  I paid about $1,000 
for the camera, the 20mm lens and the electronic view finder.  I think 
the image quality is first rate, and 10x14" (image size) prints are no 
problem.  Like you I wanted something smaller on occasion than the huge 
dslr's.
