Not sure what you're referring to with this Mark.

With very rare exceptions, every piece of equipment I've purchased
was for specific types of work, often for specific jobs.
I do not consider investing in the fine tools of my trade
as "ridiculous consumption."

When the "need" to sell arises I consider the least used tools first.
Yet I find it phenomenally difficult
to part with those tools which earned their keep for decades.
Most weeks I simply cannot come to terms with selling the:
1955 8x10 Deardorf kit,
1960 Linhof Technica IV kit,
Cambo Ultima
or
the Hasselbad 500CM Kit;
even though they've not earned a dime in a very long time.

Other items, sold under duress, I simply could no longer afford to own.
As much as I enjoyed ownership they simply did not earn their keep;
while the equipment that came after - did and does earn.
I have little interest in ownership for it's own sake.

There's nothing "frivolous"
about in operating business
(the buying and selling of goods and services)
for 40 plus years.

The buggy whip factory may not have failed
if they'd figured out when and how to retool
for the horseless carriage trade.

I don't pretend to know your requirements,
photographic goals, or business plan;
But if, as you say, it's imperative
for a professional working today
to shoot, minimally, a 24x36 sensor,
holding off for a year or ten,
because of an unwillingness to "retool"
may seem a questionable business decision.
