Are the palms of your hands suntanned?  :-)  ;-)

Strangely enough, the colour and tone of the skin doesn't make much 
difference - many years ago I discussed this with an afro-american 
photographer who confirmed that it works whatever the skin tone. 

It is, however, only a rule of thumb - a grey card is more accurate.
