Steve,
I would suspect the only thing the menu setting would do is correct  
for vignetting and write the lens focal length in the EXIF data. The  
vignetting is not very much in any of the rigid 50mm Summicrons so it  
may not make much difference. I expect the biggest differences would  
be in the wide angles and of course the f1 Noctilux,
