You may like to consider one of the humidity controlling cabinets. Ask at
your camera store? Mine stocks them.
The silica gel you have in there will absorb some moisture but does become
saturated and ineffective.
The mechanical parts certainly benefit from periodical operation as the
lubricants become thicker and sticky.
I haven't heard of that de-gassing from plastic containers, however it does
occur with the moulded vinyl dashboards and their mould release agents in a
new car. The deposit does build up on your windshield.
