Fine, expensive tools will not make one a better craftsperson or artist. However, a fine craftsperson will, in most cases, choose (or make) the best tools, within their budget, to achieve their objectives. Finding or making the correct tool for each objective is part of the creative process. I'm constantly fascinated by the metal workers who may make a half dozen or more tools to create a single finished lamp, gate, or sculpture. Those tools may never be used again. (similar to our own making (or buying) of adapters, battery packs, panorama rigs, etc.) But first you have to know what you're trying to achieve. It's just that simple. A 280 mm f:4 apo with 1.4x and 2x apo extenders will not make one into a Doug Herr Passion, dedication and tenacity may. If one has those qualities in their soul they'll seek and find the tools necessary to achieve something close to their visions.
