In Europe, the system of road signs has long been standardized, has  
nothing to do with the EU--already back in the 1960s, when I was a  
child in Poland, the Communist countries too used the same signs as  
everyone else. Most of them are pictograms or numbers in red circles  
etc., but the word STOP is universally used, even in countries whose  
language uses another word for the verb "to stop".
