One of many problems alluded to in the article
revolves around those doing the editorial and essay assignments
cannot afford to do that work without adjunct corporate work
which, ultimately, compromises their journalism.

Salgado has become an industry virtually unto himself.
I love his work and passion and do not mean that as a criticism.

There's very few others who work in the ways and funding that he does.

Magnum is full of corporate shooters.

Things have definitely changed.

Your last sentence speaks directly to the problem:
When quality in publication is low
why does y(our) local paper gravitate to amateur freebies
instead of paying for higher quality work?

Because the advertisers (money) don't care?
Because the editors don't care?
Because the readership doesn't care?

How's the quality of the writing?
