Yes, for objects that are not very deep, the extra light from a dedicated flash would be a great help. However, for deep-throated flowers, photographed out of doors, the only solution that I can see is to stop down as far as possible and back off to around 20 inches, take the photo and crop the image. With this lens, there is sufficient detail that cropping should not be a problem.
