The problem is that the Epson 3800 onboard firmware occasionally flakes out. 
The symptoms of it flaking out for me were that it suddenly lost its IP 
address. When this happens you have to reset things so that it will ask for 
an IP address again (or you can give it a static address). Sometimes it 
forgets its static address.

If the hardware is working properly, it works beautifully out of the box. If 
the hardware is not working properly, you're pretty much lost, because Epson 
tech support doesn't know how to help you with this and in general they 
don't understand what it means to have a network connection. One of the 
first things they will ask you is to unplug the printer from your router and 
connect it directly to your computer with a crossover cable. They get 
belligerent when you tell them that is a bad idea or 
that you can't.
