Benny was given the clarinet to learn because his father said he was too
small to try anything else. He made the best of it, but had a lot of
disappointments early in his career. He, Artie Shaw, and Woodie Herman
were, in my opinion, the best of the era in which I grew up.

I have, in my early years, tried all of the woodwinds except for the flute
and picollo, and, believe me, the double reeds like the oboe and bassoon are
the most difficult.
