Subject: [Leica] stormed the beaches at Omaha

I saw Ben at a picnic and asked if I could photograph him -- his face seemed
so ... wonderful. He bubbled immediately, he would be overjoyed. I asked
what year he was born -- "1927" he said. Talk fell to history and I asked if
he was in the war. He was. He landed at Omaha, fought through the hedgerows,
through the Battle of the Bulge, helped to liberate the Werl prison and
civilian labor camp, and came back to America to be a toy maker.

"Did you get seasick?" I asked, "crossing the channel?"

"Did I, oh did I ever."

"How did you function on the beach seasick?"

"Oh, you got over it pretty quick when you hit the beach. I think the only
reason I survived was that I was too young to realize I was going to die."
