I thought (based on my experiences with Canon DSLRs) that I might find your answer in a camera firmware update which taught the D1X to use larger cards, something I've seen several times for Canons and indeed the Leica M8... what I found was just kind of confusing, but this, here: http://www.nikonusa.com/fileuploads/firmware_upgrades/d1xandh.html whence I came from here: http://support.nikontech.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13783#Anchor-DSLR-3800 was, I fear, less illuminating than I'd hoped. For one thing, it looks as if they expect the camera to be sent in for service if a firmware update is needed... I looked at later models to make sure this wasn't a Nikon oddity of which I'd been unaware, but I guess it's just because of the D1x's vintage -- in 2001, they were probably still figuring this whole "digital camera" thing out. I finally found this: http://support.nikontech.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5101/kw/D1x/p/19/r_id/116678 where (among mentions of 8MB(!) cards), the largest CF card I see explicitly shown as supported is: Lexar Media 40x WA USB 2 GB (For cameras with Firmware updated to 1.10)* ...but note that asterisk. I assume the camera can be convinced to tell you its current firmware revision, somewhere in a menu? Note that 2GB seems a likely cutoff, as (somebody correct me if my memory is faulty) cards need to be formatted with a different filesystem to hold more than 2G, so numerous cameras stopped there, either as originally released or until firmware caught up. Type "D1x" in the search field at http://support.nikontech.com/app/answers/list/p/19 to see other D1x-related notes. On the bright side, can't you fit fairly many 5-megapixel images on a 1GB or 2GB card? :-) -Jeff
