I carry two spare  batteries and a extra16 gig sd card in a change purse
smaller than my wallet.    That will  take me through about 1500 shots, if I
ever needed that.

If you go backpacking, you'll probably carry spare flashlight batteries, and
for your GPS, and possibly your cellphone.

The batteries issue is a dead herring imho.
