I can't help with the cost issue but on the electronics question I have an 
R4s (for spare parts), now 25 years old, that came to me from a humid 
environment.  The reason it's a parts camera is entirely mechanical.  The 
electronic stuff is all working perfectly.  Whether the M8 will hold up as 
well is more related to specifics of its design than to the technology used, 
but 'electronics' by itself shouldn't be the question.
