If you're not photographing with a digital camera doing digital scans of negatives or transparencies and printing digitally you'll continue to have a hard time understanding all this as unexperienced theory. the metaphors between analog masking techniques and digital sharpening or un-sharp masking techniques only make sense if you've experienced both.
