His Jerusalem is the symbolic home of a world freed from the chains of commerce, British imperialism, and war. The song was picked up by the Wesleyan Methodist movement as a glorious example of a "Blood & Thunder" hymn, and is a non-conformist anthem that is anything but Anglican high-church, it went on to become a rousing call for humanists, socialists, unionists and reformers throught the British Empire. It is generally seen, along with "Rule Britannia" (Elgar) and "I vow to thee my country" (Holst, adapted from the Jupiter movement of the Planets Suite) as a sort of back up national anthem. The best way to hear Jerusalem (although the ELP version is excellent), is the classic Hubert Parry (composer) arrangement set for massed brass bands ,choirs and organ. It sends cold shivers down your spine and leaves you drained, particularly if you are, like I was as a lad, in the middle of one of the choirs for a "Sounding Brass & Voices" concert. Thanks for showing them Cheers Douglas philippe.amard at sfr.fr wrote: > Hi Nathan, > > I like the first four mainly for the fog rendition, beautiful light, I can > nearly feel the fresh air too. > . > And Alt 9 I think it is(chair and shadow) for its geometry.
