Reportage is seeing what the photographer sees. The ultimate end of
photography will be when neuroscience manages to capture visual
images directly from the optic nerves of the photographer and
transmit it directly to the brain of the viewer. When worked for the
Boston Globe half a century ago my photo editor strongly believed
that the photographer was the viewer surrogate. His photos should
present the same image that a viewer (i.e. newspaper reader) would
see if he was standing in the same spot. He felt that the use of
telephoto and wide angle lenses were editorializing since they
altered the nature of the scene. Of course since we all used 4x5
Speed Graphics this was a moot point.
