Once I sent a pair of Birkenstocks to a repair shop to have them
re-soled. I got a call from them, and they said, "For another $50, we
can change the uppers too."

I pointed out to the woman that I would then have a new pair of Birks
that cost just $20 more than off the shelf, plus postage.
