Use several smaller libraries (5 year collections?) and iPhoto Library  
Manger. I think it gets a bit slow when it gets big. I have one 30,000  
image library that works fine , but can get lazy.

Short term--keep them at hand incase you need to do a BIG scan.
Long term--give them to a university historical archive--mine are  
eventually headed for the Southern Historical Collection at UNC-CH.
