Thanks for your excellent post. I used Panotools and in fact still do. I
agree about the mathematical side. But once you get the hang of it, it
seems to work, and work fairly well. It's just not a push button
solution. 

I prefer software that forces you to understand on a certain level what
it's doing. One nice thing about bad lenses -- and a reason why everyone
should own one or two -- is that they make great photos for learning
(versus Leica images that don't need much in the way of fixing).
