When the operators introduced it 10 years ago or so, it was considered a "by the way" kind of feature--simple, with its 160- character limit (hence the many abbreviations), but maybe someone would use it. Now it is 10-15% of a typical mobile operator's revenue and probably a higher percentage of profits. It is also incredibly useful. Two examples: - my son is at Bath university in England. If I want to get in touch with him, I ALWAYS use text. Why? Because I have no idea if he is in class, out on a date, or whatnot. With a text I can reach him in a totally unobtrusive manner, and if he replies right away, then I know I can call him. - I have participated in several business meetings where I needed to communicate with one of the other participants in a discreet way. In the old days one might pass a note to that person, not very discreet. Nowadays it is much more common to send an SMS.
