Doug responded off list with extremely useful comment, too. These neat jewellery subjects and presenting them provide another interesting aspect of photography to work at learning. I'd like a basic studio lighting setup (for portrait especially too). However, if you will think about adding or subtracting light with a dark card either in the path of the sun or the reflection from the other side of the tent then you can control how the object looks; the roundness and shape of an object is determined by shadow and highlight. If it will help you to visually see the effect of the light modifiers, then use something larger than jewelry, say a medium glass bottle or some other highly reflective object. With a little tape and some artfully cut pieces of paper blocking the light you can begin to see the change in definition of your subject as you change the shadow pattern. For and advanced course, try using coffee beans or black beans as the substrate and use some very careful light from below to trans illuminate your subject. We could start a Friday studio shot perhaps.
