My Canon G2 took nice IR photos. Later models I tried did not. Sometimes
newer is not necessarily improved, all things considered.

If I remember correctly, the G5 was 2.8 through the entire focal length
range and the subsequent G's were not. Perhaps it may be worth the wait
to see if they go back to that; it was a deciding factor for my decision
to purchase the G5...
