Brighter isn't necessarily easier to focus.  One of the brightest SLR 
viewscreens ever made was in the Leicaflex Standard, which is virtually 
impossible to focus outside the central microprism area because it's 
essentially an aerial image.  This is where AF SLR viewscreens have gone to 
compensate for the AF system's appetite for viewing system light.
