I prefer straps with quick release clips that pull tight to elastic.
The elastic seems to get everything moving and bobbing (generally out  
of synch with my own rhythm)
You can buy the straps and clips of all sorts at REI and other  
outfitters to make any dimension you like.
You can also get parts which will work with existing clips and straps  
on backpacks and bags.
