I find the tripod very useful for stability, however very inconvenient to 
use.  I do however use a monopod when stability is needed, and find it a 
good second place.  For my European trip this year I have ordered a light 
weight, collapsible to 14" unit to use when needed.  It also works as a 
walking stick for double duty.  ;-)
