A few years back I dragged my wife around to a few stores to look at  
Leica, Nikon & Swarowzki binos for her to use while birding.

Short version is that with comparable specs in the $800-$1400 range  
or so, we both liked (and bought) a particular Nikon model (don't  
quite remember which one); close focussing and dim light were  
particularly revealing as I recall.

Now we're thinkin' about a scope...
