I've only used the D300 on one photo shoot using 1000iso and 1600iso. While
the high iso on the D300 is also amazing, the D3 still
has cleaner high iso images. D300 shows more noise at 1600 and 3200iso. But
the noise is 100% improved over D200,D2x files. With
either camera, you're going to enjoy shooting low light Nikon images like
never before.

I used NEF/RAW 14bit lossless compression on these D300 images and the same
for the D3 test images.

By the way, the free Nikon NX software that comes with the D300/D3 is almost
useless on 14bit images, unless you want to take an
hour lunch while the images are opening. And this is on 4gb iMac. Maybe it's
usuable for 1 or 2 images. Lightroom had no problem
opening the images in just a few seconds. I've been a Nikon Capture user for
years and have always like the NEF processing but while
NX may be good for small adjustments, it's just too darn slow compared to
Lightroom or CS3.
