Take a look at the Canon flatbeds - I've had a a 9900F for years now, 
very good results from 6x6 and 6x9 cm, I've read that its successors are 
even better, has a nice set of negative/slide holders too. Superb 
results as an office/paper scanner too - I copied some official car 
documents with it and even the German police were amazed at the quality 
when they stopped us.
