You can actually start was an apprentice with a qualified "Meister" and take vocational training courses to attain your qualifications (can take up to 4 years), or study to become a Diplom Fotograf within 3 years (BA Photography I suppose), but the former are more likely to get a job. Only a Meister is considered to be qualified sufficiently to train apprentices in his/her business, though what some "less" qualified photographers do is set up a business and keep a Meister on their books as an advisor or part time staff member in order to gain access to "professional" contracts or projects. I had thought of taking some of these courses a few years ago after I was made redundant, but then my translating business took off like a Saturn V and I never found the time to spare - so I'm still just a "happy snapping amateur" as far as the German market is concerned (which of course hasn't prevented me selling a few shots here and there under a different title i.e. "Bildbearbeitung" (Image Processing).
