Daniel,

I know that this isn't a Blurb book, but Michael Hintlian's Digging is an
absolutely wonderful book and a towering achievement of photography and
documentation. I just got a copy shortly before Christmas (one of his last
signed copies that he posted a message about here) and I have been very
happy I did. The use of B&W is very strong, the compositions are
innovative and very successful, and the total portrait he creates of the
workers and the whole project is astounding in its completeness and depth
and beauty. One of the great books of the last few years.

That makes me think of the other book I put in that category, Henry Wessel,
the retrospective published this year by the San Francisco Museum of Modern
Art and Die Photographishe Sammlung. Wessel is a Bay-area photographer of
many decades who shoots the everyday and ordinary scenes and people of
California and the West with an M2 and (apparantly) a Canon 35mm lens in
black and white (and a few in color). Mike Johnston has a nice write-up
about Wessel and this book some months ago. But, also, not from Blurb.

Robert
