I wound up liking the XTi so much I kept it after the shoot, and continued using it over the 20D after it came back from repair. My brother in law has the camera now, and loves it. You're right about weight and size. The weight and size make's it easy to take along even as walk about camera. The only problem with these little boxes is the color balance under available, or dim light. If they get that down, and given the low cost, I have no problem using them as throw away cameras every 12-18 months (i.e. as the technology evolves).
