I'm sure you could've done a much better job if you were shooting from the eye! This type of photography rarely works or produces worthwhile images. And usually illustrates an insecure "people photographer." He's a kid and would probably pose for a moment while you made something worth while. Or better! Made a donation and got a poppy! Then he'd have let you shoot all kinds of pictures. :-) Here's how you could've made something out of this... Photograph him while he was involved pinning a poppy on someone, or some how in communication with a donor. If your subject is busy doing something rarely are they aware they are being photographed. I think the young cadet deserves something better than an off the hip grab thing as you show here. Basically the only thing one learns from this kind of action is, it creates meaningless exposures.
