I've had no difference in battery life with lens detection turned on 
nor with third party batteries.

If I just turn the camera on, and shoot away without any chimping and 
fiddling much with menu settings, I can get over 400 shots per 
battery. If I chimp a lot and zoom in to check things, take a couple 
of shots, delete some etc I might get as few as 100.
