Jack,

I'm not sure if it was unusual but by way of explanation it was probably
because they were members of the Cartwright family, some
of whom were loyal to the king during the Civil War. That the royalists
torched the place as they retreated after defeat at Naseby
indicates most Cartwrights were protestants.

The Cartwrights owned the manor house for over 300 years until the line
ended in 1954 when Richard Cartwright and his son Edward
died in a car crash.

Thanks for looking.
